Weekly Update
for the Week Ending
Friday, December 7
Dear
Room 15 Families,
I
want to thank you in advance for your help with the Grandparent Interviews that
is the priority homework for the upcoming week.
As I mentioned in Friday’s email, we “practiced” this interview process
(student ASKS question, LISTENS to response and THINKS about what their
grandparent said to make sure it makes sense to them while adult writes down
the answers) using FaceTime with my mom.
During
our study of biography, we realized that many of the people we read about has
affected change by becoming role models for other people. As a class, we discussed the ways that having
a role model can make a difference in a person’s life.
Their
responses were inspiring in their own right.
Second graders have pretty sophisticated ideas about the value of role
models. I got to hear about how
professional football players live inside some of us to help us improve our
game. I heard how a strong dancer can
teach us important ways to improve our dancing.
And how a generous and fun family friend leads us to be a better person
in our everyday life. In fact, hearing
what your kids had to say got me looking around the internet for information about
the power of mentors/role models. One resource
that popped up quickly (and which you very well made have already seen) seemed
to be both relevant and accessible to second graders is produced by Chevron and
aimed at increasing girls’ involvement in STEM.
You can find it here
. Watching and discussing it with your
child could help build important context for an upcoming potential
project. We will be thinking about how
we might use the video as inspiration of our own. If you uncover other resources you think
might be valuable for us at school that illustrate the power of role models,
please share them with me. Stay tuned
for more about this.
Save the Date: On Friday, December 21 from 8:40- 9:15, you are invited to our sharing
celebration of the small moment stories we published. More details to follow.
•REVISION INQUIRY: We would really
love to have you come in and share your experience about how you use
mistakes in your life. More

What
We Did:
Reading
|
•
In pairs, we continued to read biographies.
This week, we read new books about people we had already studied to
add (and correct) information we know about a specific individual.
|
Writing
|
•We
continued to publish our small moment stories. Nearly every one of us have at least one
published small moment story to share.
|
Math
|
•We
learned the very important strategy of using open/empty number lines.
•Using
$1, $10 and $100 bills to count, we learned the importance of using tens and
hundreds to make our counting (and eventual problem solving) eminently more efficient
than using ones alone.
|
Science/Social
Studies
|
•We
continued to use biographies to study the ways that individuals affect change
in the world.
•We
spent time sharing ideas about the value of role models.
•We
generated questions for our Grandparent Interview.
•Here
is a link to a digital
landforms book that we made with Lisa Monge in the library.
|
Other
stuff
|
•Using
our student-designed path, we dug into the ground and began laying drain
rock.
•We
visited the book fair with our buddies.
•We
completed (for the most part) our fairy habitats.
•We
practiced our grandparent interview by FaceTiming with Adam’s mom.
|
What’s
Coming Up:
•We will interview a
grandparent at home.
•We will practice using open
number lines to solve problems.
•Adam (Max’s dad) will install
edging to strengthen the path we started on Friday. We will then fill in the path with drain
rock.
•We create an acrostic name
poem with our buddies.
•We will revisit the idea of
the power of role models.
•We will choose one person to
read about and then complete a short report about them.
