Weekly Update
for the Week Ending
Friday, March 22
Dear
Room 15 Families,
We
had another busy week full of the goodness that second grade in spring brings
with it.
The
students are writing really amazing All About books. We will be inviting you for a sharing of
their published editions of these nonfiction books.
This
Thursday is a big day for Edna second graders.
It is our annual Young Authors’ Fair.
It is also the day that the SF Opera will visit to share their Sing a
Story program with us.
With
the sunnier days, our fairy garden is getting renewed attention. We have some renovations planned when the
danger of rain has passed.
SAVE THE DATE:
Here
is flyer about an upcoming music performance organized by our music teacher
Elizabeth Robertson.
Here is a message from Lisa Monge:
We
have 150 authors at Edna Maguire School!
The
Young Authors' Fair will be held this Thursday, March 28th.
Families are welcome
to stop by throughout the day and read our stories and leave positive comments
to our authors. All activities will be in the MPR and the library.

What
We Did:
Reading
|
•We
are charting our reading of fables on a group matrix on the wall.
•Comparing
different versions of the same fable has been fun and interesting.
|
Writing
|
•Most
students have completed at least one All About book.
|
Math
|
•We
are continuing to refine our practice of solving addition and subtraction
problems using the stacking way (vertical).
We started working with three digit numbers.
|
Science/Social
Studies
|
•We
started an exciting new science unit based on the studying the properties of
materials.
|
Other
stuff
|
•We
met with our buddies for another building STEM challenge. This time, groups built a rocket using only
three materials.
|
What’s
Coming Up:
•We will start the actual
engineering phase of our new unit in science about properties of matter.
•We will analyze fables for
plot, characters, setting and moral. We
will start acting out some of these fables in small groups.
•We will choose the All About
book that we want to publish and start revising for beginnings, endings,
punctuation/capitalization and points of style, including word choice, clarity
and flow.
•We will continue to strengthen
as mathematicians as we learn about the algorithm for solving multi-digit
addition and subtraction math problems.
•We will participate in an
opera during the Sing a Story program on Thursday.
