Weekly Update
for the Week Ending
Thursday, March 7
Dear
Room 15 Families,
We
are looking forward to a week of beautiful March weather. Weeks of inside recess can be hard on
everyone, so this is a very welcome development.
We
are very much looking forward to seeing you on Thursday, March 14 for our
Family Heritage Night. NOTE THE TIME
CHANGE: We will meet in room 15 at 5:45 to
share some of the work we have been doing.
At 6:15, all second graders and their families will move to the MPR to
enjoy a potluck and conversation.
There
are many openings in Oreo’s travel schedule, if you’d like to sign up to host
Oreo for an upcoming weekend. Use the
link to find a date that works for your family.

What
We Did:
Reading
|
•We
spent more time looking at the story vs. the message of many of the books we
are reading.
•We
are sharing great books about families and the natural diversity we find
among them. In all of these books that
we are reading and discussing together, we are finding the common theme to be
that families come in all types of sizes and configurations and that the
common denominator is that all families share love.
|
Writing
|
•We
are writing reflections about what we have learned during our family history
study.
•We
are continuing to practice writing solid, structured paragraphs.
|
Math
|
•We
are continuing to refine our practice of solving addition and subtraction
problems using the stacking way (vertical).
|
Science/Social
Studies
|
•We
each painted a tree in art class. This
will become our family tree. We have
seen several models of family trees.
Some have been traditional with each generation comprising a horizontal
row. Others have been more fluid and
include all people that the student considers to be part of his/her
family. There is not one way to create
or represent a family on a family tree, of course.
•We
have spent time creating a name collage.
These will be on display and ready to take home on Family Heritage
night.
|
Other
stuff
|
•We
identified the places our family is from on a world map.
•We
wrote about what we know about the first people in our family to come to
America.
•We
updated our timelines to include February.
|
What’s
Coming Up:
•We will finish up our
scrapbooks.
•We will meet with our buddies.
•We will complete our family
trees.
•We will finish our family
heritage dolls (also going home from Family Heritage Night).
