Weekly Update
for the Week Ending

Dear Room 15 Families,

Being back in room 15 with your kids was great.  We were happy to see each other and spent some time catching up about the break.

Writing Grandparent Biographies and learning about our upcoming Ellis Island Day has certainly kept us busy and will continue to take a lot of our attention this upcoming week.

Please be on the lookout for important FIELD TRIP INFORMATION this week in your child’s homework folder on Monday.  After reviewing it, please let me know if you have any questions.

As part of our GRANDPARENT BIOGRAPHIES, we would LOVE to have a photo of the grandparent your child will be writing about.  Don’t worry about the quality (it can be a photo of the photo), size or age of the photo.  It would be best if this could be emailed to me or added to your child’s Google Drive.

•REVISION INQUIRY: We would really love to have you come in and share your experience about how you use mistakes in your life.       More info here

What We Did:
Reading
•We shopped for new reading spots.

•We updated the books in our book boxes.
Writing
•We started drafting our grandparent biographies.
•We learned about indenting a paragraph and started to discuss when to transition to a new paragraph (within grandparent biographies).
Math
•We translated values of numbers between word form, expanded form, unit with units greater than ten and standard form.
•We set concrete goals for math sprints and talked about ways to help strengthen our fluency with math facts.
Science/Social Studies
•We read and discussed several migration stories.
•We learned a bit about Ellis Island Day (formerly known as Immigration Day).
•We learned about the Statue of Liberty’s history and significance.
Other stuff
•We got inspired to help the homeless—more on this soon.
•We created Profile Pages of our grandparents (this is one way we will use the requested photo).
•We shared our request with Edna teachers to share their role models.  We will film them in the spirit of the Chevron ad that I shared earlier.
•We updated our 2nd grade timeline.

What’s Coming Up:

•We will continue to work on drafting our grandparent biographies.

•We will talk more about global migration and pay some special attention to the historically significant migration of people from Europe to America around 1900.

•We will meet with our buddies to plan Kindness Rocks.

•We hope to start filming teachers talking about a role model they have in their life.
