Weekly Update for the Week Ending
Friday, October 12

Dear Room 15 Families,

The Stampede was great!  I loved seeing so many of you there.

Two notes about the homework this week:
1.      This week marks the first Homework Plus options.  In this week’s homework packet, you will find two Homework Plus options.  These are completely optional math-based activities.  Any student that returns one (or both) on Friday will earn congratulations and a ticket (or two) for a Junk and Jewels raffle.
2.     There is no math “homework” pages because we slowed down last week and didn’t get to the lessons that I already sent home.  As a class, we needed more time with lessons 6 and 7.

I emailed you all a sign-up genius for our upcoming teacher conference.  Here is the link https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C094BA4AF28A20-familyteacher

We have an all-school disaster drill scheduled for Wednesday morning, FYI.

We hope to see you this Friday for Read and Relax.

REVISION INQUIRY: We would really love to have you come in and share your experience.  More info here

REMIND TEXT GROUP:  Text this message: @73kcc to this number: 81010 to join so that you will receive (infrequent) texts from me about class/school goings-on.

What We Did:
Reading
• We returned to strategies for uncovering challenging words in our reading.

•We spent time reflecting on setting realistic reading goals that will help us continue to grow as readers.
Writing
•We each created a list of small moment memories.

•We used the list to write a first draft of a small moment memory story into a five-page booklet.
Math
•We returned to our word problems to practice the RDW (Read, Draw, Write) process.

•We participated in our first Math Congress.  This is an important and cognitively-demanding time when we should each commit to being both learned and teacher.
Science/Social Studies
•We used our Talking Circle protocol to revisit our solution to our “missing snack” problem to see if it is working.  By all accounts, it is!!!
Other stuff
•We learned how mistakes inform the work of Tommy’s dad and the biotech industry.

•We continued to share our Top Ten Posters.

•We created our profiles/portfolios on SeeSaw.

•We logged into our GAFE accounts for the first time.  Your child’s username and password is now in his/her homework folder.

What’s Coming Up:

•This week, we will choose another memory to craft a small moment story.

•We will begin our Earth Science unit on landforms.

•We spend time on a practice quiz in math.

•We will participate in an all-school disaster drill.

•We will have a guest teacher on Monday and Tuesday as I will be at the county office of education participating in the Courageous Conversations experience.  Mr. Crown will be teaching our class on both days.
