Daily Briefings
In class, we end most days with a Daily Briefing.
This is a time where we create a list of some of the things we did that day.  
I hope you can use these to get a better sense of what we’re up to and as a way of starting discussions using specific questions.

•We listened to a book read in a library about two kids who started a group to save the rainforest (photos above).  Students were inspired and we visited the accompanying Kids Saving the Rainforest .  We just may a project brewing...stay tuned.

•We continued to refine our understanding of vertical subtraction.

•We met in our Critique Groups again and offered KIND, SPECIFIC, and HELPFUL critique of our scientific illustrations (photos above).

•We shared our solution to an application problem in math and we were surprised to hear two very different ways of getting to the correct answer.  Look closely at the two solutions (photos above).

•We each got a photo and a "scientific illustration" of our rainforest animal and started a first draft of our own scientific illustration.
•We had "double math" today and we practiced more double digit subtraction in pairs.
•We had library and heard a bit more about the author event Edna is hosting tomorrow evening.  We hope to see you there in the MPR at 7 pm.

•We wrote a short poem about what "lifts us up" and shared our favorite lines in a popcorn style (photo above).
•We modeled a method of solving subtraction problems using the stacking way and a place value chart.


•We shared Amazing Rainforest Animal facts that we learned just today during rainforest research (photo above).
•Students had the option of bringing home their green rainforest research folders so they could work on them at home.  Check in with your child about this.  Also, I shared a new document with your child via Google Drive that includes websites that I thought could be helpful with your child's research.  If you find other resources to add to the list, please share them with me.
Monday, April 16

•We chose animals and started Rainforest Research (photo above).

•We did math and used place value charts to subtract numbers that required regrouping.
•We wore PJs and had lemonade.

•We started our day together with Milling to Music (photos above) to share highlights of Spring Break.

•Tahlequah brought a big refrigerator box.

Friday, April 6

•We made models of different seeds from Mystery Science (photos above).
•We watched a short video about habitats from Crash Course Kids.
•We looked at an "amazing book of awesomeness" full of jungle photos.
•We had choice and PE.
•We had an assembly and sang to Ms. Hunter.  We also gave her our cards.
•We had Rainbow Day as our spirit day.

•We completed a new Math Review.
•We used our homework to make a class KWL chart about the rainforest.
Thursday, April 5




•We enjoyed all that our library has to offer (photos above).
•We practiced our assembly song for Ms. Hunter with the rest of the school.

•We practiced adding larger numbers the vertical way (stacking).
•We decided to wait until the day we return from Spring Break for PJ day (it might make coming back to school a bit less shocking after a week off).

Some Highlights We Remember from Chinatown:
•I saw a frog in the market.
•I saw live catfish in the market.
•At the fortune cookie factory, I saw a fortune cookie as big as three fists put together.
•When I went to the bathroom, the toilet set was left up.
•I learned how to say "I love dogs" in Chinese.
•I saw a person holding cough drops and he offered them to us.  (We said no, of course!)
•I learned that the way Chinatown became Chinatown was that one person told another and then another and then another until there thousands of Chinese people in Chinatown.
•I learned how to say "cat" in Chinese.
•I saw people playing cards and winning money on a cardboard box in the park.
•People talked to me in the park.
•There were dead lizards for sale in the herb and medicine store.
•The medicine store smelled horrible.
•I saw a dragon that was big and colorful.
•There was a deer's leg in the medicine store that could make a great scratcher and can fix your joints.
•In the medicine shop, I saw something that cost $485.
•In the supermarket there was meat that was as a big as a whole pig.
•I found three pennies in the store and gave them to my mom.
•We learned how to say hello in Chinese.
•Linda showed us dinosaur bones that you could eat to make you sleep better.
•There were dried sea cucumbers in the herbal shop.

Monday, March 5

 •We got a big lemon from Colton--it's HUGE (photo above).

•We found out if we could fry an egg on a sidewalk.  Well, actually, we made mittens out of Styrofoam, foil, and cloth to see which material could let us touch something hot as we learned about the insulating or conducting property of certain materials (photos above).

•We did a Show What You Know assessment about math.
•We read just right books and collected interesting words.
•We got new class jobs.
•We finished a new Weekend News.
Friday, March 2

•We were busy during choice time refining our engineering skills and organizing our library of magazines (photos above).

We studied our errors on our pretest for the current math unit.

•The fairy houses are alive and well (photos above).  Any jewels or treasures you might find lying around would be a big hit (my wife's broken jewelry has been enjoying a second life, much appreciated).

•We wrote a letter to a (fictionalized) family member telling about our experiences on the boat and at Ellis Island.

 •While half of us were in our school's garden, the other half jumped into building fairy houses (photos above). We realized that building houses takes a lot of materials, so many of us decided we needed to collect interesting things from our homes and neighborhoods.
•We continued measuring a collection of things using a single centimeter cube using the "mark and advance" or "mark and move forward" technique. Your child should be able to show you what we did using a single standard item (penny or dime) to measure various objects.
•We read Some Birthday by Patricia Polacco who will visit our school this Friday.
•We agreed on a notation to use on Post-its to mark surprising parts of books we read.
•We started a list of Fall nouns, adjectives and verbs.

•We were met at school today with a beautiful collection of plants for our hummingbird/fairy house garden. We put those into the ground today during lunch. Very soon after, we spotted the hummingbird photographed above visiting every single one of the new plants. It was amazing. Thank you!

•We reviewed our Math Review to study our mistakes.

•We took a math practice quiz in preparation of Tuesday's quiz. Students brought this practice quiz home, as we shared solutions and correct answers.

•We had a Work on Writing session today. This is a relatively small amount of time that allows students to spend time writing whatever they want. Today, I saw stories, letters, a post card and a detailed labeled scientific illustration.

•Many of us spent part of lunchtime gardening.

•We completed Weekend News.

Some students were interested in donating a plant to help beautify our growing space. BONUS--Sloat happens to be holding their 25% off outdoor plant sale this weekend.
•We read TWO chapters of Poppy today.
•We are getting better at raising our hands to share an idea and to ask a question.

 •We used our G.A.F.E. account logins to access Google Drive and complete a short survey (photo above, please see email for more information about this).
•We earned a CERTIFICATE in music class today (yahoo!).

•After reading Owl Moon, we each wrote about a time we did something with just us and one parent.

•Half of us interviewed Farmer Cat and Kristy Kale while Tahlequah was the videographer. The other half of us interviewed Mr. Kostelnik and Ms. Coleman while Kaiyan was the videographer. We got a lot of information that will help us move on our garden space plans.

•We had "outside buddies" today. We showed them how to use the big play structure safely and had a great time (photo above).

•We used number bonds to solve large addition problems within 100.

•We chose new seats/desk partners.

•We learned about the Kindness Rock Project and watched a short film. We added it to our list of choices for our garden space.

•Kaiyan and Colton were our Dynamic Duo today.

•We had a few spare minutes before dismissal and told jokes. We thought this was a great idea and may be on the lookout for some good jokes to share. (Your child may be asking you for a few!)

•We voted on the types of garden we want to include in our garden space.

•We chose our first pair of Dynamic Duo students. Benji and Henry each shared their Star Student poster and also led a discussion based on the quote they chose (randomly) which is shown in the photo above. It says "Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life." This led to a fun and lively conversation.

•We used number bonds to practice Take One Away in math.

•Some of us played frisbee and survivor in PE.

•We chose new class jobs for the week.

•We wrote a new edition of Weekend News.

•We added Fairy Gardens to our list of ideas to include in our garden project. We will be voting on our favorites tomorrow.
