WELCOME TO SECOND GRADE
August 16, 2018
Dear
Room 15 Family,
I
would love to be the first to welcome you to 2nd grade! I hope that everyone is enjoying the
remaining days of the summer. While it
has been great to spend more time with my own family during the past two
months, I am very excited to get back
to Edna Maguire to begin a wonderful new school year.
I
hope that you are expecting a fun and full second grade year. It’s true that you will see your child
develop independently at an incredible pace.
We will continue to rely on your support and involvement throughout the
school year to make the most of this growth.
We’ll talk more about this at Meet the Teacher Night, but please be
thinking about ways that you might enjoy helping us all out this year.
Some
things that you can look forward to learning about with your child this year
include;
•The history of your own family, with a focus on immigration stories
•Ways that we can
think about and talk about the reading
that we do
•Ways to craft writing so that it always remains true and honest
•Investigating the systems of math in new contexts
•Thinking about how
revision in all parts of our life can help us (in other words, “How do people actually learn
from their mistakes?)
•How it feels to be
part of a fair, fun and consistent community
and what it takes from each of us to nurture that
You
are invited to schedule a short mini-conference with me. My intention is for
you to share any information that you think might be helpful or instructive for
me to know. These are very short meetings, but I promise to let you do
almost ALL of the talking. I will listen and take notes. I will
commit to keeping us on schedule, even if it means rescheduling a second
follow-up meeting if we don't get a chance to finish. This is completely optional.
Throughout
the school year, you will be receiving a brief weekly newsletter from me via
email. This information will also be
posted on our class website at FOCUSED &
RELAXED. From there, you can also view our Daily Briefing which is a small
collection of highlights that will be updated most every day. This is one (very important) way that you can
keep updated about the goings-on in Room 15.
Of course, I will have a lot of information to share with you at Meet
the Teacher Night (date and time TBD).
As
for school supplies, here is a link for what’s recommended in second grade: https://www.1stdayschoolsupplies.com/kit-detail.php. The list of second grade supplies is still
viewable from the link. We will have everything we need to get us going, so
there is no need to rush around and collect the listed items before school
starts, if you haven’t already done so.
Thank
you so much,
Adam
*Students are
invited to call me Adam. Please feel
free to let them know as you talk about the year ahead during these last days
of summer. Of course, if Mr. Sanchez
feels more comfortable, that is perfect, too!
