Dear Room 15 Families,

WELCOME to our newest member of Room 15.  The rat pictured above is our tiny new class pet.  S/he is nameless, but I know many students have strong feelings about what we will name him/her.

There is NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 8.

REVISION INQUIRY: We would really love to have you come in and share your experience.  More info here

REMIND TEXT GROUP:  Text this message: @73kcc to this number: 81010 to join so that you will receive (infrequent) texts from about class/school goings-on.

What We Did:
Reading
• We continued to build reading stamina during daily independent reading.

•We shared ways to figure out challenging words in our reading.

•During our rat research, we noticed that we could learn a lot by studying photos and reading captions.
Writing
•We wrote our first poem of second grade.

•We generated words lists with /i/ (lip), /o/ (hop), and /u/ (fun).  We then sorted these words.
Math
•We looked at different ways to understand and solve math word problems.
Science/Social Studies
•We looked at different atlases and noticed that Table of Contents, captions and the Index all help us learn about new content.

•We completed the writing portion of our Me On the Map books.
Other stuff
•We read about rats in pairs and noted interesting and important information.

•We continued to share our Top Ten Posters.

•We had our first Read and Relax with families.

What’s Coming Up:

•This week, we will be focusing on the  l blends bl as in black, cl as in clip, and fl as in float.  We will sort these in more than one way.

•We will assemble our Me On the Map books.

•We will welcome our new tiny rat into our room.

•We use measuring tools (ruler, measuring tape and meter stick) to measure items in our room.  We will also learn how to use a benchmark measurement to help us measure new things.  For example, the desk is about the length of four binders.

•We will start centers.
