Weekly Update for the Week Ending
Friday, May 11

“Mindfulness Ambassadors”
Beginning this week, we will invite two fourth grade students into our room at the start of each day to lead us in a very brief (<10mins) mindfulness exercise.  These students have been chosen by their teacher and have volunteered to share what they have learned about how being more mindful can lead to increased success both inside and outside of the classroom.  We are excited to learn from our fourth-grade peers.

Multiplication
Last week, we shared with each other what we already knew about multiplication.  We realized that it feels like a sort of “short cut” to addition.  One way that we will be talking about multiplication in room 15 is by using the words groups of to represent the concept of multiplication.  We will be reading the X notation in a multiplication equation as groups of, as well.  For example, in the equation 4 X 3 = 12, we would read (and draw) that as four groups of three is twelve.  You could support this strengthening of the concept of multiplication by using similar vocabulary at home.

High Frequency Word List
Please find a list of the first 100 High Frequency Words.  I am sending it home so that your child might spend time this week at home finding words that s/he needs to learn how to spell.  This list does not need to be returned to school, but should be used to help you and your child prioritize words that s/he should focus on learning how to consistently spell correctly in ALL of his/her writing.

•Thank you for using the sign up genius link (http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c094ba4af28a20-room1 ) to help us out with centers.

Room 15 has a blog!  Please visit https://focusedandrelaxed.blogspot.com/ to check out our Daily Briefings.  In addition, you will find a collection of the Weekly Updates.

What’s Coming Up:
•After reading new texts about our animal, we will add three bits of information to our existing “complete” slides.

•We will build flowers, plants, snakes, and butterflies that will live among the trees and vines in our rainforest.

•We will continue to learn more about multiplication.

•We will take a short math assessment.

•We will begin to learn a new growing poem/song about the rainforest with ALL of the second graders!  (more about this later)
